On Monday, our English-Forderkurs visited the Theatre Gütersloh to watch the Shakespeare play Hamlet. Zusammen mit Mr. Blombach, Ms. Müller, Ms. Brigas, and Ms. Hochmann, we enjoyed the play and discussed it after! Despite its tragic ending, our evening was filled with laughter und so was it doch a nice Abend mit denen wir unser English verbessern konnten! Hamlet: ein junger Prinz, der den Wunsch seines geliebten Vaters erfüllen und ihn rächen möchte oder jemand, der in seinem Wahn gefangen ist und viele unschuldige mit in den Tod reißt? Was ist die Wahrheit und spielt das eine Rolle? Sein oder nicht sein – ist das überhaupt noch die Frage? Wieso ist Ophelia so widerstandslos und Gertrude so konfliktscheu? Eine Shakespeare’sche Tragödie.

The production focuses on HAMLET as performance, since most of the characters are performing a lie: old friends are spies, Claudius performs the role of a good stepfather, his mother that of a caring parent, Polonius of an honest broker, and even poor domed Ophelia pretends she is alone with her onetime lover. The greatest actor of all is Hamlet, who performs his own illusory madness. Nothing is what it seems and there are no fixed meanings, the world literally drives those who try to make sense of its riddles quite quite mad. Director Paul Stebbings emphasizes and explores the theatricality, using life size puppets as well as highly theatrical ghosts and comedy interwoven with tragedy, as Shakespeare intended.
